Thirsty for Thankfulness: Day #5
Thirsty for Thankfulness: Day #5
"It's too cold." "I'm hungry." "This is boring." "I wish we had..." "Oh no, it's rainy."
Grumbling and more grumbling. We have all been guilty at times of being less than content with our circumstances. While not every situation is ideal, we can make every effort to see the good in the situation.
The Israelites certainly had reason to celebrate the miraculous deeds of the LORD after he brought them our of slavery in Egypt. He even provided them the dry river bed of the Red Sea to cross.
Does Scripture record the marveling at God's power or does it record their grumbling spirits? Actually, we see the typical human response... a little of both. Today in our Scripture, we will look at the celebration. The caution comes in the fact that the next chapter speaks a great deal about grumbling about the sweet manna that had been provided from heaven.
Our routine:
We will sit down together.
We will enjoy the cup of blessing that can be provided by a good dose of Scripture.
We will stay and linger with our Creator as we reflect on our blessings as revealed in the words we read each day.
We will close with words of prayer to help deepen our relationship with Almighty God.
Scripture:
Exodus 15:20-21
"Then Miriam the prophetess, Aaron's sister, took a tambourine in her hand, and all the women followed her, with tambourines and dancing. Miriam sang to them:
'Sing to the Lord,
for he is highly exalted.
The horse and its rider
he has hurled into the sea.'
Exodus 15:1-5, 11-12
"Then Moses and the Israelites sang this song to the LORD;
'I will sing to the LORD,
for he is highly exalted.
The horse and its rider
he has hurled into the sea.
The LORD is my strength and my song;
he has become my salvation.
He is my God, and I will praise him,
my father's God, and I will exalt him.
The LORD is a warrior;
the LORD is his name.
Pharaoh's chariots and his army
he has hurled into the sea.
The best of Pharaoh's officers
are drowned in the Red Sea.
The deep waters have covered them;
they sank to the depths like a stone...
Who among the gods is like you, O LORD?
Who is like you--
majestic in holiness,
awesome in glory, working wonders?
You stretched out your right hand
and the earth swallowed them.'"
Ephesians 5:19-20
"Speak to one another with psalms, hymns and spiritual songs. Sing and make music in your heart to the Lord, always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ."
Reflection:
Can we imagine the feeling of Miriam with the tambourine? God has shone himself to be so mighty!
Now, instead of being Miriam, be ourselves. Imagine--reflect on--the powerful works of God in our own lives. We can probably think of times when we crossed our own "Red Sea" on dry land.
God was and is and continues to be, the Almighty. Let us sing to the LORD!
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, we praise You for who You have been in our lives. We praise You for who You currently are in our lives. We praise You, God, for all that You have yet to be in our lives. Lord, You are a warrior. Lord, thank you for the countless blessings You have put into our lives. Help us to recognize and acknowledge that they came from You, Lord God. In Jesus' Name. Amen.
